What Slice of Life is NOT

Writing tips

  1. Find the extraordinary in the ordinary — a shared silence, a routine disrupted, a small kindness.
  2. Let the character's inner voice carry the story — reflection is your engine.
  3. Pacing can be slow, but every paragraph should deepen the reader's connection.
  4. Sensory details ground the reader: the smell of coffee, the sound of rain, the feel of worn fabric.
  5. Endings don't need to resolve everything — life goes on.

Example openings

“The garden was the only thing his mother had left him, and he had no idea how to keep it alive.”
